 Welcome Monument Design
Winners Announced
Chet and Theresa Johnson have been named the winners of
the competition to design a Welcome Monument for Historic Morongo
Valley. Their design, which features three etched granite panels,
depicts the various aspects of Morongo Valley's cultural, botanical
and animal life. Ultimately, it will be set in place at the top of
the Morongo grade on Highway 62.
The next phase of the
project sponsored by the Morongo Valley Chamber of Commerce will be
to raise the funds to produce and put the new signage in place.
Leslie Rotstein, Chamber President says the funds will be raised
through private donations and grants.
Six very different
designs were submitted for the competition, all from Morongo Valley
residents. The other local artists included: Michael Pritchard,
Barbara Sliger, Woody Smith, Donna Weeks and Bob Woolling.
To vote, residents either downloaded a ballot from the
community's www.92256.com website or attended a special voting day
on Sunday, February 20.
We were thrilled that nearly 200
residents voted in the competition,"says Leslie Rotstein. Over 100
people showed up on Sunday at Covington Park to meet with the
artists and view their models. That's an amazing turn out for a
community of our size," the Chamber President concluded.
The
competition, which began last Fall, was coordinated by Chamber
Members Linda Christian and Dr. Donna Yerman.

Viewing time is brief at 50-60 mph---so a simple yet
complicated design to say Morongo. Rectangle represents man,
circle represents earth, the overlap, an invisible bond. The
negative space speaks of the openness of the valley, and the
bird our major industry. The eye goes to light. White became
the choice. |
